Rebels blanked 5-0 in Edmonton

It was another tough go on special teams for the Red Deer Rebels as they fell 5-0 to the Edmonton Oil Kings in Western Hockey Action action Friday night.

Edmonton scored three of their goals on the power play, in eight opportunities, while the Rebels were 0-for-3 on the night with the man advantage.

Josh Williams opened the scoring 1:28 into the game when he put home a rebound past Rebels goalie Ethan Anders for Edmonton’s first power play tally on the night.

Dylan Guenther made it 2-0 late in the first frame when he ripped home a one-timer for another man advantage goal for Edmonton.

Williams made it 3-0 for the Oil Kings with another power play goal five minutes into period two.

Edmonton added two more goals in the third period, both of them even strength.

Guenther’s backhand pass through the slot bounced off the skate of Rebels forward Josh Medernach and past Anders at the 11:47 mark. Williams capped off his hat trick on the night when he beat Anders with just 6.4 seconds left to play.

Sebastian Cossa made 33 saves for Edmonton to earn the shutout victory. Anders turned aside 32 of the 37 shots on goal he faced for Red Deer.

Edmonton improved to 5-0-0-0 on the season while the Rebels dropped to 2-4-2-0.

The game was played at the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton, temporary home of the Oil Kings for the 2020-21 season.

The Rebels and Oil Kings meet again Saturday night at the Westerner Park Centrium in Red Deer. Game time is at 6 p.m. and it can be heard live on 106.7 REWIND Radio.
