The Alberta Deans of Business Case Competition 2021 had a different format than in the past, but that did not hinder the valuable learning opportunities for 50 provincial business post-secondary students, including four from RDC.

“Red Deer College’s Donald School of Business was proud to host this year’s all-virtual event. The provincial case competition is an amazing learning and growth opportunity for our students,” says Dr. Nancy Brown, Dean of Donald School of Business. “This year’s event added virtual collaboration, creative problem-solving, and presentation tools and experience to our students’ growing business competencies.”

Moving to an online platform from March 11 to 13 due to COVID-19, the Alberta Deans of Business Case Competition featured teams from 11 post-secondary institutions. Team members collaborated online as they evaluated a specific business case and presented their solutions to a panel of judges, which included members from the business community.

The competition, which was presented by Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) Education Foundation, featured students from RDC, Bow Valley College, Grande Prairie Regional College, Portage College, NAIT, Lakeland College, Medicine Hat College, SAIT, Keyano College, Concordia University of Edmonton, and Norquest College.

The event encouraged learners to apply and showcase their evolving business knowledge, along with their analytical and presentation skills, according to a real-world situation while fostering connections with one another and the business community. Participants had to utilize a diverse blend of their business education in order to successfully evaluate the case. These academic areas included marketing, management, finance, accounting, and human resources.

On Friday, March 12, each team was provided with the same business case to research, analyze, and articulate its recommendations to a group of judges. After the results were tabulated, Portage College was determined the winner on Saturday, March 13, receiving $4,000. The team from NAIT placed second and earned $2,500. SAIT wrapped up third spot, picking up a $1,500 prize.

Brianne Campbell, Therese Hoven, Alexis Harwood, and Brittney Lausen proudly represented Red Deer College.

“In a year like no other, this year’s event was like no other, but the students rose to the challenge and seized the opportunity,” says Brown. “This was made possible through the support of our presenting sponsor, CPA Alberta Education Foundation.”

The Alberta Deans of Business Case Competition began in 2005 in order to enhance the role of business training and education for the economic development of Alberta. It helps link post-secondary member institutions with business, industry, professional organizations, and one another by promoting conversation, collaboration, and connection.

These crucial partnerships provide more opportunities for business students across the province to further develop their education and skills as future community leaders.
