RCMP remain on scene in the area of 38 Avenue and 45 Street in Red Deer’s Eastview neighbourhood for what has been determined to be a homicide.

At 4:42 a.m. today, Mounties responded to a 911 call, and located a deceased adult male on the road.

Police say the male was the victim of a gunshot wound and that the Major Crimes Unit (MCU) has taken over the investigation.

The name of the victim has not been released and police not said whether any suspects are in custody.

The area remains closed to vehicle traffic while the RCMP conduct an extensive scene examination.

Evidence gathered on scene leads police to believe that this is an isolated incident, and there is no risk to public safety.

With Joseph Welsh Elementary School only a short distance away, officials with Red Deer Public Schools confirm that both Joseph Welsh Elementary School and Eastview Middle School were made aware of the police presence in the neighbourhood.

RCMP notified the school district , however, that it was all clear. Both schools were never directed to follow any protocols, according to district officials.
