Canes win again

Rebels let another lead slip away in 4-3 OT loss at Lethbridge

Mar 13, 2021 | 8:56 PM

It was déjà vu all over again Saturday night as the Lethbridge Hurricanes scored three power play goals and overcame a multiple goal deficit to defeat the Red Deer Rebels 4-3 at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge.

The Rebels fell to 1-3-2 on the season while Lethbridge improved to 2-2-0 with their second win over Red Deer in as many nights.

Justin Hall opened the scoring for Lethbridge when he went bar down on Rebels goalie Ethan Anders for his third goal of the season 4:09 into the first period.

Red Deer replied less than a minute later as Jace Isley picked up a loose puck and put it home a mere fraction of a second before Ethan Rowland crashed into the Hurricanes net. Isley’s first goal of the season came at the 4:59 mark.

The Rebels took the lead on a 5-on-3 power play at the 15:51 mark of period one. Josh Tarzwell located the puck as he was falling to the ice and slid a backhander past Hurricanes goaltender Carl Tetachuk for his second goal of the year. Kyle Masters and Arshdeep Bains set up the power play goal.

Ben King put the Rebels up 3-1 when he took a long stretch pass from Zak Smith, went in all alone and beat Tetachuk for his second goal of the season, another power play tally, 6:17 into period two.

Red Deer suffered an unfortunate break with 13:13 left to play in the period, ironically, as Mason Ward’s attempt to clear the puck out of the crease ended up going into the Rebels net. Alex Thacker got credit for his first goal of the season for the Hurricanes, another power play goal that made it a 3-2 game.

Lethbridge tied it at the 15:55 as they struck yet again with the man advantage. This time it was Hall blasting home a one-timer past Anders from the left face-off dot to send the game to the third period tied 3-3.

Neither team scored in the final period as the game drifted towards overtime, but not before Jaxsen Wiebe took a goalie interference penalty with 21.8 seconds left to play, sending the Rebels into the extra frame shorthanded.

In overtime, Chris Douglas missed on a clearing attempt for the Rebels and it proved costly as the Hurricanes maintained possession until Alex Cotton ripped home the game winner at the 53-second mark to give Lethbridge their second straight win.

Lethbridge outshot Red Deer 30-25 on the night and was 3-for-4 on the power play while the Rebels were 2-for-5.

Hall was named the game’s first star after piling two goals and an assist for Lethbridge. Alex Thacker was named second star with a goal and two assists. Rebels defenceman Kyle Masters was named third star on the strength of two assists.

The Rebels and Hurricanes wrap up their weekend series Sunday at the Westerner Park Centrium starting at 6 p.m. The radio broadcast on 106.7 REWIND Radio hits the air at 5:50 p.m.
