April 24

Volunteer appreciation event in the works next month

Mar 10, 2021 | 1:01 PM

Red Deer-based Volunteer Central is leading and coordinating a steering committee of staff from more than a dozen non-profit organizations in the city to host a drive-through volunteer appreciation event at Westerner Park.

The event is slated for Saturday, April 24, from 1-3 p.m. to celebrate National Volunteer Week.

Staff from these and other organizations will recognize and cheer for our volunteers at a festive, noisy, outdoor parade-style event. As they drive slowly along the route in Westerner Park, volunteers will be also be entertained by local musicians, dancers, and entertainers.

The event is by invitation from volunteer coordinators to their volunteers in order to comply with health regulations regarding gatherings and drive-through events.

Organizations are collaborating to provide small gift bags, and there will be an opportunity for volunteers to participate in a draw for a gift basket.

The organizing committee is comprised of the volunteer coordinators from:

Sexual Assault Centre of Central Alberta, the Red Deer Hospital Foundation, C.A.R.E., Red Deer Public Library, Ronald McDonald House, Family Services of Central Alberta, the Life Long Learning Council of Red Deer, Westerner Park, Red Deer Arts Council, Youth HQ, Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, Habitat for Humanity, Kerry Wood Nature Centre, Shalom Counselling Services, and A.L.W.A.Y.S.

Some funding for this event has been provided by the Government of Alberta through Volunteer Alberta.

According to Volunteer Canada, the National Volunteer Week theme for 2021, “The Value of One, The Power of Many,” reflects on the awe-inspiring acts of kindness by millions of individuals and the magic that happens when we work together towards a common purpose.
