Red Deer sees another COVID death, active cases down to 161

For the second time in as many days, Red Deer has recorded another death attributed to COVID-19.

The latest death, a woman in her 80, occurred on March 8. The case included comorbidities.

Meantime, the city’s active case count continues to go down with 161 as of Wednesday, down 34 over the last 24 hours and Red Deer’s lowest total since 161 cases were reported Jan. 26.

There have been 2,673 COVID-19 recoveries in Red Deer, an increase of 12 as the total number of cases attributed to the city rose by 11 to 2,865.

As of Wednesday, the number of active cases linked to the Olymel COVID-19 outbreak is down to 18, along with 497 recovered and three deaths out of 518 total cases.

Across the province there was another 399 cases of COVID-19 reported Wednesday. That’s out of 10,414 tests for a positivity rate of 3.8 per cent.

The number of active cases in Alberta stands at 4,463, a decrease of seven over the past 24 hours.

There are 254 people in hospital because of COVID-19, a decrease of nine, including 37 in intensive care, unchanged from Tuesday.

Two additional COVID-19 deaths were also reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours, including the one in Red Deer, to bring the province’s total to 1,928.

As of Wednesday, there have been 734 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, an increase of 47 over the past day, including 721 cases of the UK variant. There have been 130 variant cases in Central Zone.

Alberta has administered 303,962 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of March 9.

The Central Zone has 440 active cases and 31 hospitalizations. Five people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital. The zone has now had 117 COVID-related deaths.

Currently, 259 Alberta schools, about 11 per cent, are on alert or have outbreaks, with 1,017 cases in total. There are 192 schools are on alert, with 387 total cases. Outbreaks are declared in 67 schools, with a total of 630 cases. The province says in-school transmission has likely occurred in 192 schools. Of these, 102 have had only one new case occur as a result.

In Red Deer, there are outbreaks of 10 or more cases at St. Patrick’s Community School, St. Joseph High School and St. Thomas Aquinas School, while there is an outbreak of 5-9 cases at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School.

Alerts (two to four cases) are in effect at St. Francis of Assisi, Father Henri Voisin, G.H. Dawe Community School, West Park Elementary School and Ecole Camille J Lerouge School.
