Burgers of the Month for February raise thousands

Mar 9, 2021 | 9:11 AM

Cilantro and Chive doled out not one, but two cheques to charities for February’s burgers of the month.

For every burger sold, $2 went to the guest chef’s organization of choice.

For Lacombe City Councillor Cora Hoekstra, who helped create ‘The Spicey Yorkshire’ for the Lacombe location, $1,062 went to the Lacombe and District Historical Society.

“We need the Society to keep drawing our attention to the value of our buildings and ancestors, and to appreciate how far we have come,” says Hoekstra. “I wanted to support an organization that is not always noticed.”

2021 marks the 50th anniversary for the Lacombe and District Historical Society. While many events and activities have been cancelled due to the pandemic, the cociety is currently working to preserve their extensive photography and negative collections.

In Red Deer, Guest Chef Dustin Harper created the ‘Rink Burger’ to help raise $1364 for the newly launched Normandeau School Values Program, which is centered around Red Deer Public School Values for Learning and Life.

March’s Burger of the Month in Lacombe is the ‘Loaded Potato Skin Burger,’ created with input from local Guest Chef Al Scholing of Scholing’s Produce. It’s an Alberta beef patty and two Scholing’s baked potato ‘buns,’ with shredded cheddar, pepper bacon, green onion, sour cream, iceberg lettuce, beefsteak tomatoes, sliced onion and pickles. Donations from its sale will go to Al’s charity of choice, the Team Jigger Foundation.

The March Burger of the Month in Red Deer is the “You Grow Girl,” created in collaboration with Guest Chef Roxanne Martin. It includes, a brown rice, walnut & black bean patty, jalapeño jack cheese, avocado crema, chipotle aioli, iceberg lettuce, beefsteak tomatoes, sliced onion and pickles on a potato roll! $2 from every burger sold will go directly to Roxanne’s charity of choice, Red Deer Meals on Wheels.
