Alberta seeks ideas to improve COVID vaccine capacity

EDMONTON, AB – The Government of Alberta is looking for proposals on how it can better understand and explore opportunities related to its vaccine capacity.

The province says they are looking for a long-term strategy to enhance its COVID-19 vaccine development and manufacturing capabilities.

Over the next 10 business days, they will be accepting proposals from companies and organizations.

“The economic recovery of Alberta, Canada, and the world depends on achieving mass vaccination against COVID-19,” says Minister of Jobs, Economy, and Innovation Doug Schweitzer.

“Our government is exploring potential opportunities in the development and manufacturing of vaccines right here at home. Albertans are hard-working innovators and problem solvers, and we are ready to see how they propose to continue the fight against COVID-19.”

Schweitzer’s ministry is developing a Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Sector Strategy. Developing pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical capacity is said to be a key part of that initiative.

Those interested in submitting proposals can apply online here. The deadline is March 21.

As of Sunday’s update on COVID-19, 290,391 doses of vaccine had been administered in Alberta. Just over 90,000 people have received two doses.

The province has approved vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, and most recently, AstraZeneca.

More Albertans will become eligible for COVID-19 vaccine later this month.
