Preliminary hearing set for man accused of kidnapping, beating Pigeon Lake woman

Mar 2, 2021 | 12:50 PM

A preliminary hearing will take place later this summer for a man from the Louis Bull First Nation accused of abducting and beating a woman from the Cree Nation community of Pigeon Lake.

Lionel Richard Twins, 60, will find out on Sept. 13 if his case has enough evidence to go to trial.

Twins is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping without a firearm, aggravated assault, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, and two counts of assault in the January incident.

According to Maskwacis RCMP, it began around 11:00 p.m. on Jan. 19 when officers were called to Pigeon Lake after learning an adult female had been abducted from a residence.

Police searched throughout the night for the suspect vehicle, and in the early morning hours, were dispatched to a commercial business after a witness located a female with life-threatening injuries.

Mounties and EMS responded immediately and confirmed the woman was the abducted victim from earlier in the evening. She was taken to a local area hospital for treatment, in serious condition.

RCMP located and stopped the suspect vehicle around 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 20, but the suspect is said to have fled into a wooded area. He was apprehended, however, after a brief foot chase.
