Red Deer remains with 499 active COVID-19 cases

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer as of Monday remains unchanged at 499 active cases.

There have now been 2,269 recoveries, an increase of 17 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 17 to a total of 2,793.

The number of deaths in Red Deer because of COVID-19 remains 25.

Alberta Health says the number of active cases linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Olymel pork plant in Red Deer is down to 122. There have also been 385 recoveries, out of 509 total cases, and three deaths linked to the outbreak.

Overall, Alberta announced another 291 cases of COVID-19 on Monday. That’s out of 5,933 test results for a positivity rate of 4.9 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is 4,674, an increase of 90 from Monday. Recoveries are up 199 to a total of 127,233.

There are now 257 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, seven more than Sunday, including 48 in intensive care, up two.

Two additional COVID-19 deaths were also reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total to 1,886. The deaths occurred on Jan. 31, a female in her 90s in the Calgary zone linked to the outbreak at Foothills Medical Centre, and Feb. 27, a female in her 80s in the North zone linked to an outbreak at a seniors living facility. Both cases included comorbidities.

As of Sunday, there have been 457 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, an increase of 27 over the past day, including 449 cases of the UK variant.

Alberta has administered 235,508 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of Feb. 28.

The Central Zone has 672 active cases and 33 hospitalizations. Ten people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, up one. The zone has had 111 COVID-related deaths, none of which were reported in the past 24 hours.

Currently, 236 Alberta schools, about 10 per cent, are on alert or have outbreaks, with 890 cases in total. 174 schools are on alert, with 363 total cases. Outbreaks are declared in 62 schools, with a total of 527 cases. In-school transmission has likely occurred in 164 schools. Of these, 99 have had only one new case occur as a result.
