Two more COVID-19 deaths linked to Olymel outbreak

Two more people have died as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak at the Olymel pork processing facility in Red Deer.

A man in his 50s, identified as Henry De Leon, passed away on Wednesday and a woman in her 60s passed away last Sunday, according to Alberta Health.

As of Friday there are 156 active COVID-19 cases stemming from the Olymel outbreak, along with 341 recovered cases and now three deaths. Alberta Health has been notified of 500 cases linked to the outbreak at Olymel.

The plant was temporarily shut down last week as a result of the outbreak.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer as a whole as of Friday sits at 551, a decrease of 11 from Thursday.

There have been 2,174 recoveries, an increase of 29 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 30 to a total of 2,749.

The number of deaths in Red Deer linked to COVID-19 is now 24.

Across the province, there are 4,505 active cases, up 21 from Thursday, and 126,406 recovered cases, up 332.

Alberta’s total number of COVID-19 cases from the start of the pandemic is 132,788.

There have been 363 variant cases identified in the province, including 16 reported on Friday. One new case of the South African variant was reported to bring that total in Alberta to eight.

There are 356 total new cases in the province today. That’s out of 9,212 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of 3.9 per cent.

There are now 269 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 55 of which are in ICU, and 1,877 deaths.

The province completed 9,212 tests in the past 24 hours.

The provincial positivity rate is 3.9 per cent.

Alberta has delivered 207,300 doses of vaccine.

The Central Zone has 722 active cases as of Friday, a decrease of 10, with 33 hospitalizations, down three. Eleven people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, up one. The zone has had 108 COVID-related deaths, including three reported in the past 24 hours – the third being a man in his 70s who died Feb. 24.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Wednesday on Twitter that her next in-person update will be on Monday.
