No Public Safety Risk

RCMP respond to potential threat at Hunting Hills High School

Feb 26, 2021 | 4:33 PM

A large number of police attended Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer Friday morning, responding to reports of a student possibly armed with a weapon.

Spokesperson Cpl. Laurel Scott with RCMP K Dvision says officers arrived on scene around 11:00 a.m. and located the student. It was determined, however, there was no weapon in their possession and no further public safety concern.

In a letter sent to parents on Friday, Principal Darwin Roscoe says the school was put into a Lock-Down as per the RCMP’s request.

“RCMP attended the school, investigated and quickly determined the threat was not real,” writes Roscoe. “Staff and the RCMP acted quickly and at no time were students or staff in danger. After the Lock-Down ended, teaching and learning continued as normal.”

Roscoe thanked the RCMP for their quick response in ensuring the safety of all staff and students.

“During our time in Lock-Down, all staff and students followed our emergency protocols,” the letter continues. “We recognize these situations may cause some trauma and some may have questions or concerns. Please be assured that these protocols are in place to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff.”

“Furthermore, we review and practice these with students to ensure they understand and respond as needed,” adds Roscoe.

RCMP say their investigation remains ongoing, and their Youth Intervention officers will be following up with the school and the youth involved to provide further support.
