Red Deer with 562 active COVID cases as Alberta’s hospitalizations dip below 300

Red Deer’s active COVID-19 case count has taken a slight dip and the number of Albertans in hospital because of the virus is now less than 300.

The number of active cases in the city as of Thursday sits at 562, a decrease of 12 from Wednesday.

There have been 2,135 recoveries, an increase of 50 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 38 to a total of 2,719.

The number of deaths in Red Deer linked to COVID-19 remains 22, unchanged since Feb. 5.

Alberta Health confirms that as of Thursday, there are 171 active cases linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Olymel pork processing facility in Red Deer, a one-day decrease of 10, along with 316 recoveries. Total cases linked to the outbreak sit at 488 and there has been one death.

Overall, Alberta confirmed 399 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.

That’s out of 9,217 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of about 4.3 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is down to 4,484, a decrease of 61 from Wednesday. Recoveries are up 452 to a total of 126,074.

There are now 280 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, down 27 from Wednesday, including 56 in intensive care, unchanged over the past 24 hours.

Eight additional COVID-19 deaths were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total to 1,874. The latest reported deaths occurred between Jan. 2 and Feb. 23.

As of Thursday, there have been 355 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, an increase of 32 over the past day, including 348 cases of the UK variant.

Alberta has administered 195,572 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of Feb. 24.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, tweeted that more than 100,000 Albertans aged 75-and-over have now booked COVID-19 vaccine appointments.

“Thank you to those who have stepped forward so far. Your decision to be immunized will help to keep you & people you come into contact with safe from COVID-19,” she said.

The Central Zone has 732 active cases as of Thursday, a decrease of 22, with 32 hospitalizations, down three. Ten people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, down two. The zone has had 105 COVID-related deaths, none of which were reported in the past 24 hours.
