Virtual convention underway for central Alberta teachers

Feb 18, 2021 | 10:32 AM

The 2021 Central Alberta Teachers’ Convention goes today and tomorrow in a virtual-only format.

Teachers will not only have access to live events, but also pre-recorded sessions available for viewing to help accommodate with the new convention configuration.

Both days will provide a full slate of learning opportunities with events starting at 9 a.m. with 278 online sessions available.

“We’re just trying to make it more interactive for everyone,” says Central Alberta Teachers’ Convention Association President Brenda Lewis.

“Teachers are looking forward to these two days of professional development, no matter what that looks like, because we are always wanting to (be) better for our students.”

The convention will be filled with guest speakers covering a wide range of expertise, with tech experts like Jesse Brown, health and performance experts like Dr. Greg Wells, advocates for education reform, comedians, and many more.

Alberta Teachers’ Association President Jason Schilling made an introductory video for the convention, in which he takes aim at the UCP government for their treatment of educators in the province.

“Teachers feel betrayed. There is a sacred trust between elected leaders and people, and that trust has been broken with this pension debacle,” he said in reference to the province’s move to give AIMco a veto to override Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund investments in late December, possibly taking away teachers’ rights to be consulted about their pension management.

Schilling also talks about the frustrations attached with the pandemic, and even touches on the riots in Washington, but focused on wanting teachers to be a shining example.

“It’s easy to become discouraged in the face of adversity. But we are teachers. We may be frustrated, but we are not defeated,” says Lewis.
