Red Deer with 394 active COVID-19 cases, Alberta hospitalizations still trending down

Alberta confirmed 284 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday.

That’s out of 7,972 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of about 3.6 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is down to 5,215, a decrease of 56 from Saturday. Recoveries are up 335 to a total of 121,829.

There are 351 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, down eight from Saturday, including 60 in intensive care, down four.

Five additional COVID-19 deaths were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total as of Sunday to 1,780. The deaths occurred between Feb. 11-14 and include a male health care worker in his 50s from Edmonton Zone. Alberta Health says he had comorbidities.

As of Friday, there were 171 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province. Those figures are only updated on weekdays.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer as of Thursday sits at 394, up 31 from Saturday. There have been 1,846 recoveries, an increase of 10 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 41 to a total of 2,262. The number of deaths in Red Deer because of COVID-19 remains 22.

Red Deer’s active caseload is the highest it’s been since the city had 415 at one time on Dec. 21. The city peaked at 434 on Dec. 19.

Alberta Health confirms that as of Sunday, there are 194 active cases linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Olymel pork processing facility in Red Deer, a one-day increase of six, along with 120 recoveries. Total cases stemming from the outbreak sit at 315, including one death.

Not all cases from the outbreak are attributable to Red Deer as a case would be categorized by a worker’s home address.

The Central Zone has 678 active cases as of Sunday, an increase of 19, with 28 hospitalizations, down six. Four people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the same as yesterday. The zone has had 101 deaths as a result of COVID-19, none of which were reported in the last 24 hours.
