Preliminary hearing set for Sylvan Lake man charged in alleged drug trafficking operation

A preliminary hearing will take place this spring for a Sylvan Lake man charged in an alleged drug trafficking operation in central Alberta.

Dallas Anthony Griffin, 33, is scheduled to find out on May 5 if his case has enough evidence to go to trial.

Griffin is charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance, six counts of careless use of a firearm, six of unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and breach of recognizance.

Griffin’s charges stem from a joint investigation by Red Deer RCMP and Sylvan Lake RCMP General Investigation Sections which led to the arrest of three people and the seizure of drugs, cash, weapons, and three hand grenades.

Between June 18 and June 26, 2019, police conducted an investigation into a drug trafficking operation in Red Deer and Sylvan Lake. On June 27, 2019, a search warrant was executed at a Sylvan Lake residence.

As a result of the search, Mounties seized 416 grams of methamphetamine, 17 grams of fentanyl, 1.5 grams of cocaine, three hand grenades, body armour, seven firearms, ammunition and $25,528 in cash.

RCMP say members of the Canadian Armed Forces from Wainwright, AB took possession of the hand grenades for safety purposes and to confirm their authenticity.

A total of 35 criminal code charges were laid against three individuals arrested.

Co-accused Emily Jean Herman, 22, of Sylvan Lake, was charged with 16 counts and will see her trial continue in Red Deer provincial court on Mar. 11, 2021.

Another individual, Lincoln Capel of Red Deer, was also arrested during the execution of the search warrant. He was arrested on outstanding warrants and charged with possession of a controlled substance and failing to comply with a recognizance.
