Alberta’s COVID-19 hospitalizations dip below 400, Red Deer’s active cases rise to 326

Alberta confirmed 351 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.

That’s out of 9,968 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of about 3.5 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is down to 5,501 a decrease of 199 from Wednesday. Recoveries are up 540 to a total of 120,676.

There are 397 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, down 24 from Wednesday, including 71 in intensive care, down six.

Though encouraged by the continued decline, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw cautioned, “There are still as many people in hospital as there were on November 23. This is a reminder that we must keep this downward trend occurring.”

Sixteen additional COVID-19 deaths were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours, ranging between the ages of 56 to 93, which brings the province’s total as of Wednesday to 1,744.

Alberta has administered 135,575 doses of COVID-19 vaccine. More than 42,000 Albertans have now received two doses and are fully inoculated.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer as of Thursday sits at 326, up 37 from Wednesday. There have been 1,812 recoveries, an increase of 15 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 52 to a total of 2,160. The number of deaths in Red Deer because of COVID-19 remains 22.

Alberta Health confirms that as of Thursday there are 163 active cases linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Olymel pork processing facility in Red Deer, an increase of 10, along with 102 recoveries, up three. Total cases stemming from the outbreak sit at 266, an increase of 23.

The Central Zone has 679 active cases as of Thursday, an increase of five, with 30 hospitalizations, which is a decrease of three. Five people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, unchanged from Tuesday. The zone has had 101 deaths as a result of COVID-19, none of which were reported in the last 24 hours.

The province has now detected 156 variant cases of COVID-19, including a single-day record increase of 36 over the past 24 hours, including 149 cases of the variant first identified in the United Kingdom and seven of the South African variant.
