Red Deer with 289 active COVID-19 cases

Alberta confirmed 339 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

That’s out of 10,873 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of about 3.2 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is down to 5,706 a decrease of 125 from Tuesday. Recoveries are up 458 to a total of 120,136.

There are 421 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, down six from Tuesday, including 77 in intensive care, down one.

At the peak on December 31, 783 Albertans had been admitted to hospital due to COVID-19 while another 140 were in ICU. This means that over the last two-and-a-half months, hospital and ICU numbers in Alberta have fallen by 46 per cent.

Six additional COVID-19 deaths reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours, which brings the province’s total as of Wednesday to 1,728.

Alberta has administered 129,452 doses of COVID-19 vaccine. Nearly 37,000 Albertans have now received two doses and are fully inoculated. Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced Wednesday that 71 per cent of residents of long-term care and designated supportive living have now received both doses of vaccine.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer as of Wednesday sits at 289, up seven from Tuesday. There have been 1,797 recoveries, an increase of 14 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 22 to a total of 2,108. The number of deaths in Red Deer because of COVID-19 remains 22.

Alberta Health confirms that as of Wednesday there are 143 active cases linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Olymel pork processing facility in Red Deer, an increase of eight, along with 99 recoveries and one death out of 243 total cases.

The Central Zone has 674 active cases as of Wednesday, an increase of 18, with 33 hospitalizations, which is an increase of one. Five people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, unchanged from Tuesday. The zone has had 101 deaths as a result of COVID-19, including two reported over the past 24 hours – a woman in her 100s on Feb. 5 linked to the outbreak at Vermillion Health Centre and a woman in her 80s on Feb. 8. Both cases included comorbidities.

Sixteen more cases of the variant strain of COVID-19 first detected in the United Kingdom have been recorded in Alberta, bringing the total to 113, including 19 in the Central Zone.

Hinshaw said the province has been alerted of two cases of variant COVID-19 where in-school transmission is likely the source.

Currently, 303 schools, about 13 per cent, are on alert or have outbreaks, with 867 cases in total. 260 schools are on alert, with 506 total cases. Outbreaks are declared in 43 schools, with a total of 361 cases. In-school transmission has likely occurred in 77 schools. Of these, 62 have had only one new case occur as a result.

There are currently 303 active and 8,737 recovered cases at long-term care facilities and supportive/home living sites n the province. To date, 1,125 of the 1,728 reported deaths (65 per cent) have been in long-term care facilities or supportive/home living sites.
