The Red Deer Food Bank is using its latest fundraising event to honour one its most dedicated former employees.

The “Celebration of Service for Foodbank Freddy” is a food drive happening this Saturday, February 13, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Parkland Mall’s west entrance, next to Walmart.

The drive is being put on to honour Fred Scaife, the longtime executive director who announced his retirement in early 2020. Scaife went from needing the Red Deer Food Bank’s services back in the 1990s to championing the cause himself for over 20 years.

Some of the items on the food bank’s current needs list are canned meat, canned vegetables, canned soup, pasta, rice, tomato sauce and juice boxes. The food bank will also accept toiletries like toothpaste, toothbrushes and soap.
