RDC loses provincial funding for Be Fit for Life Network

Feb 7, 2021 | 12:51 PM

Red Deer College is set to lose an annual $70,000 provincial grant.

Effective June 30, 2021, RDC will no longer receive those dollars which it’s used for many years to fund programming under the Government of Alberta’s Be Fit for Life Network.

The network was created in 1982 to educate and support Albertans to live healthy and physically active lifestyles, explains Jim Brinkhurst, Vice President, College Services at RDC.

“RDC was recently informed by the Recreation and Physical Activity Division of Alberta Culture and Tourism that funding for the Be Fit For Life Network has unfortunately come to an end,” he says. “While the news is disappointing, the same community programming offered as part of the Be Fit For Life Network will continue under RDC’s Fitness & Wellness Services.”

Brinkhurst says the college is very aware that the network has positively impacted many individuals, hence why RDC remains committed to offering those services.

“Some of the programs that will continue at RDC include Fitness Leadership Training, Physical Ability Readiness Evaluation (PARE) testing, and pre-planned or customized school and community programs,” says Brinkhurst. “Youth-focused initiatives cover a range of interactive activities and physical literacy skills, while encouraging fitness, positive nutrition habits, wellness, and self-confidence.”

The loss of funding will not impact any jobs.
