Central Alberta Refugee Effort hosting virtual talks for Black History Month

Feb 7, 2021 | 12:23 PM

Central Alberta Refugee Effort (CARE) is conducting a series of interviews this month with local people of Black heritage.

Their stories, experiences and accomplishments in Canada, as well as their perspectives on Black History Month and Black Lives Matter will be shared on CARE’s Facebook page all month-long.

The interviews will be followed by a panel discussion at month’s end.

“We will be interviewing people originally from South Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Jamaica, and Canada, hearing their stories and perspectives. We will be also sharing videos with singing, music, poetry and dance by local Black people, sharing their diverse cultures with you,” CARE says in a release.

“We wish to celebrate the valuable contributions, and accomplishments that Black people have added to the fabric of our society and the richness of their cultures. It’s something to be celebrated all year, not just in one month. Black History Month is a reminder of the sacrifices, struggles and achievements of those Black people who paved the way, and those who are here now.”

The first interview with Monybany Dau, from South Sudan, is already available on the CARE Facebook page.

In addition to Black History Month, CARE is planning a virtual conference for March 21, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. More details to come.
