Alberta Party announces leadership race

Feb 6, 2021 | 12:13 PM

The Alberta Party has announced its timeline for electing a new party leader.

It was led during the last provincial election by Stephen Mandel who took over from Greg Clark in early 2018. Clark served from 2013-2018. Jacquie Fenske was named interim leader in February 2020.

For the first time in an election, the party ran in all 87 of Alberta’s constituencies in 2019, receiving just over nine per cent of the vote — about 170,000 votes — but zero seats.

“I am so incredibly excited to announce the timeline for our leadership race. Greg Clark and Stephen Mandel grew the Alberta Party and set the course for an exceptional political party poised for electoral success. The next leader will be the driving force in moving the Alberta Party into a competitive position for 2023,” says Conrad Guay, party president.

“Last year saw the Alberta Party increase our fundraising numbers, grow our membership, and add to our staff. This year will see us create a solid foundation for 2023 by electing a new leader and holding a policy conference.”

A release says finding a new leader will allow the party’s grassroots members to continue building towards an Alberta, “defined by sensible policy rather than partisan war.”

Nominations will open May 25 and close Aug. 31. The party will elect its new permanent leader on Oct. 23.
