New active cases in Alberta drops below 600

Alberta is reporting 573 news cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the total number of active cases in our province now to 9,727 – down 260 from Friday.

With 10,894 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, the province’s positivity rate is presently 5.3 per cent.

Since the start of the pandemic, 120,330 Albertans have contracted coronavirus, while 109,078 of those have recovered.

The number of hospitalizations in Alberta due to COVID-19 is currently 676 – down 15 from yesterday, while 114 are in ICU – down one from Friday.

Sadly, 13 more deaths have also been reported over the past 24 hours, with two of those being in the Alberta Health Services (AHS) Central Zone. Both were males in their 50’s who passed away on Jan. 19.

In the city of Red Deer, there are currently 160 active cases of COVID-19 – down three from Friday, while 1,578 have recovered – up 13 from Friday. The number of COVID-related deaths in Red Deer remains at 18.

Coronavirus outbreaks in Red Deer are currently identified at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, Etana Wells group home, Extendicare Michener Hill, a private group home, Points West Living, Love, Fun & Learning Day Home, Olymel, Red Deer Remand Centre, Walmart (South Location), Wonderflow School House, and Montair Aviation in Springbrook.

Throughout central Alberta, Red Deer County has 34 active cases – down two from Friday and still one recorded death.

Sylvan Lake has 18 active cases – down one from Friday and still two recorded deaths.

Lacombe County has 19 active cases – down one from Friday and still one recorded death, while the city of Lacombe has 21 active cases – down two from Friday and still one recorded death.

Additionally, there are 76 active cases in Clearwater County (Rocky Mountain House) – down nine from Friday. There are 220 active cases in Ponoka County – down 26 from Friday, but now 10 recorded deaths, and 22 active cases in Mountain View County – the same as Friday.

The town of Olds meanwhile, has 12 active cases – down one from the day before. Kneehill County remains with six active cases and three recorded deaths from the virus, while Stettler and County has five active cases and still two recorded deaths as of Saturday.

For local schools, a COVID-19 Alert is in place for Ecole Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School with two to four cases identified, while an Alert also remains in place for Ecole John Wilson Elementary School in Innisfail with 2-4 cases as well.

Elsewhere, there are 3,786 active cases of COVID-19 in the Calgary Zone, 3,407 active cases in the Edmonton Zone, 1,325 in the North Zone, 799 in the AHS Central Zone, 396 in the South Zone, and 14 additional active cases in unconfirmed locations.
