Officials with the Outreach Centre in Red Deer are praising community sponsors for the success of their Adopt a Family program in 2020.

Executive Director Barb Barber says they’re very pleased with reaching their fundraising goal of $60,000.

“We had a really good Adopt a Family campaign and we were able to serve 212 families and that included 429 children,” says Barber.

The work doesn’t stop there, however, as the Outreach Centre is looking to updating the 10-year old Julietta’s Place – a housing option for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

The facility provides 10 affordable, secure suites while families participate in intensive programming as they learn to live free of domestic violence.

Services offered include:

  • Intensive Case Management – Trained case managers are available to all women and children residing in Julietta’s Place. Case managers provide support to help residents deal with the direct effects of violence.
  • Group Support – Group Support Is offered once a week. There are two groups, one concentrating on domestic violence issues, and the other deals with parenting concerns.
  • Domestic Violence Therapy – Residents have access to a licenced therapist to learn how to cope with emotional trauma
  • Play Therapy – Child residents have access to a licensed play therapist to work through any potentially traumatizing events.

“The 10 year birthday party or present we would like to give it, is to just update it and do some updates as far as our furniture and furnishings go,” adds Barber.

The annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event is also planned to take place in the fall this year in hopes of giving organizers more time to adjust to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barber notes additional changes at the organization as well this year, such as having fewer in-person meetings to more online interactions when possible.

However, despite the pandemic, Barber says the Outreach Centre’s goal is still for all Albertans to have the opportunity to reach their full potential and benefit from the highest possible quality.
