Red Deer active COVID cases down slightly

Alberta is reporting 669 news cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total number of active cases in the province now to 10,565 – down 531 from yesterday.

With 14,888 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, the province’s positivity rate is presently 4.5 per cent.

Since the start of the pandemic, 118,546 Albertans have contracted coronavirus, while 106,387 have recovered.

The number of Albertans in hospital with COVID-19 is currently 744, up four from yesterday. While those in Intensive Care number 124 – up five from Tuesday.

Sadly, 21 more deaths have also been reported over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll from the virus in Alberta to 1,484.

One of those deaths was reported in the Alberta Health Services (AHS) Central Zone, with the death occurring on Jan. 18 – a female in her 90s linked to the outbreak at Seasons Camrose.

In Red Deer, there are 166 active cases – down five from Tuesday, while 1,541 have recovered – up 14 from yesterday. Red Deer’s virus deaths remained at 17 on Wednesday.

Covid-19 outbreaks in the city currently include Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, Etana Wells Group Home, Extendicare Michener Hill, a private group home, Points West Living, Revera Aspen Ridge, Kentwood Place, Olymel, Red Deer Remand Centre, Walmart (South Location), Wonderflow School House, and Montair Aviation in Sprinbgrook.

In local schools, Ecole John Wilson Elementary School in Innisfial is currently on Alert status, with 2-4 cases.

Elsewhere throughout the province, there are 4,096 active cases of COVID-19 in the Calgary Zone, 3,679 active cases in the Edmonton Zone, 1,411 in the North Zone, 949 in the Central Zone, and 411 active cases in the South Zone. Also, there are 16 additional cases of coronavirus in Alberta in unconfirmed locations.

  • Currently, 169 schools, about seven per cent, are on alert or have outbreaks, with 252 cases in total.
  • 167 schools are on alert, with 238 total cases.
  • Outbreaks are declared in two schools, with a total of 14 cases.
  • In-school transmission has likely occurred in 18 schools. Of these, 15 have had only one new case occur as a result.
  • There are currently 908 active and 7,423 recovered cases at long-term care facilities and supportive/home living sites.
  • To date, 978 of the 1,484 reported deaths (66 per cent) have been in long-term care facilities or supportive/home living sites.
