Sylvan Lake RCMP create public “Exchange Zone” at detachment

Jan 18, 2021 | 4:51 PM

Mounties in Sylvan Lake have taken a unique approach in offering their residents a safe place in which to do business.

Detachment members have created an ‘exchange zone’ for the public to use.

Located in the front parking lot of the RCMP detachment on the north side, residents will see a new sign and two designated parking spots that are reserved.

The purpose is to allow the public the ability to meet others when they need to exchange something.

“When you make a purchase or sale from a social media app and need to meet someone whom you don’t know, these spots are for you” says Staff Sergeant Jeff McBeth, detachment commander. “If you don’t feel safe having someone come to your residence, we want you to use these parking spots. If someone isn’t willing to meet you at a police station, that’s a sign something isn’t right.”

Sylvan Lake RCMP feel this is another step forward in proactively reducing crime in the community.
