Chinook’s Edge relocating Career High Schools to traditional school buildings

Students and staff from Chinook’s Edge School Division’s career high schools will be relocating to their neighbouring traditional high school next fall.

The lone exception will be Gasoline Alley Career High which will move in the fall of 2022.

Division officials say the career high culture and approach to programming will remain, but will be housed within the local high school.

The Board of Trustees passed the motion at its meeting this week after “extensive research and discussion made it clear that career high students would be best served if their programming was delivered under the umbrella of course options, teacher specializations, staff supports, and fully equipped facilities that a traditional high school provides for optimal learning.”

“The biggest reason we are making this move is because it will allow us to build on the successes we have already witnessed with blended programming, and it will allow our full-time career high students to access a much wider range of resources,” said Superintendent Kurt Sacher.

“In several of our communities, we have seen overwhelming evidence that when our career high staff and our traditional high schools design programming together to meet the needs of a student, they achieve the greatest likelihood of success for that particular individual,” he noted.

“Students will receive the same personalized level of support in their new location. We plan to find a location inside each traditional high school that allows access that isn’t intimidating and respects students who might be anxious about accessing a larger location.”
