Teachers call on province to reverse pension takeover

Jan 14, 2021 | 10:23 AM

Alberta teachers are calling on the United Conservative government to reverse a decision about how their pensions are managed.

Just before Christmas the government quietly signed an order giving the Alberta Investment Management Corporation the power to effectively veto decisions made by the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund, which is a private corporation.

Jason Schilling, president of the Alberta Teachers’ Association, says there is no reason for the change and there was no consultation.

Schilling is calling on teachers and retirees to contact their members of the legislature to press for a stop to the order.

“This is the UCP ripping up their contract with doctors all over again,” said Alberta NDP Critic for Labour & Immigration, Christina Gray.

“They used the cover of the pandemic to sign the order and waited until the day that teachers were swamped with the return of students to online learning to mention they were giving coercive control of their pensions to AIMCo.”
