Wind warning issued for Red Deer and area

Jan 13, 2021 | 11:31 AM

Not that you probably haven’t noticed already, but Environment Canada has indeed issued a wind warning for Red Deer, along with much of the rest of the province.

“Strong northwesterly winds are developing this morning and weaken this evening. Wind gusts up to 90 km/h are possible, but up to 110 km/h are possible at times near the Saskatchewan border,” Environment Canada says. “Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds.”

The wind warning is in effect for areas including the city of Red Deer, Red Deer County, Lacombe County, Ponoka County and the County of Stettler.

RCMP in Leduc are also warning motorists of poor road conditions due to snowfall, and say they are responding to a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 2 south.

“Leduc RCMP are advising motorist that roads in and around Leduc are icy due to recent snowfall, blowing snow and reduced visibility. Motorists are being asked to slow down and adjust their driving,” reads a media release.

Leduc RCMP suggest the following tips to drivers:

• Ensure all windows, side mirrors and lights are properly and completely cleared of snow;

• Help others see you, make sure your lights are turned on;

• Reduce your speed and give yourself more time to slow and stop;

• Listen to the radio for updated road and weather reports;

• Plan extra time to get to your destination;

• Be prepared for changing road and weather conditions. Pack blankets or a winter survival kit, especially if you are planning a trip outside of town.
