Red Deer firefighters won’t be collecting Christmas trees this year

Jan 4, 2021 | 11:12 AM

City firefighters will not be providing their voluntary Christmas tree pick-up service to Red Deer homes this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Christmas tree pick-up has always been a fundraiser that puts emphasis on our members getting together to socialize and raise funds for the community. Due to the limitations with the current COVID-19 precautions it would be really difficult to coordinate. We felt that cancelling the program for this Christmas season was a difficult, but a necessary decision we had to make,” said Brad Readman of the Red Deer Firefighters Association Local 1190.

“On behalf of the Red Deer Firefighters and Local 1190, we thank all residents for their continued support. We hope to be out in the community supporting those who support us as soon as we are able.”

Alternatively, here are some options for Red Deerians looking to dispose of their Christmas tree this year:

– The weight limit for all carts (Green, Blue and Black) is 59 kg/130 lbs for small carts, 109 kg/240 lbs for medium and 152 kg/335 lbs for extra-large carts – if residents are able, they can cut up their tree and place in their Green Cart, as long as the lid can close properly. We can appreciate that this may not be an option for most.

– Residents can drop trees off at the Waste Management Facility, for a charge.

– Residents can take it to one of the Red Deer County Transfer Stations, for a charge.

– Often wildlife rescue centres will take trees to use for their animals – residents can reach out to places like the Medicine River Wildlife Foundation to see if they would have a use for them.
