Red Deer health care aide charged under Federal Quarantine Act

Dec 31, 2020 | 4:34 PM

Red Deer RCMP have charged a health care aide employee under the Federal Quarantine Act following an investigation in collaboration with Alberta Health Services (AHS).

On Oct. 19, Red Deer RCMP was contacted by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) after they had been informed by Extendicare Michener Hill Long Term Care Home that an employee had failed to isolate after returning from the United States.

The matter was also reported to Alberta Health Services, who contacted RCMP on Oct. 22.

Police say a comprehensive investigation was conducted which included witness evidence and judicial authorizations to obtain records.

The employee that has been charged has been served with a summons and is to appear in court in Red Deer on Jan. 26.

A COVID-19 outbreak is in effect at Extendicare Michener Hill due to there having been two or more cases, indicating that a transmission within the facility has occurred.

“The staff member’s employment was terminated following an internal investigation, prompted by allegations that clear COVID-19 safety restrictions regarding travel were not followed. The issue was quickly reported to the authorities and Extendicare Michener Hill has cooperated fully with the RCMP in its investigation,” a spokesperson with Extendicare tells rdnewsNOW in a statement.

“Please rest assured that there is absolutely there is no connection between any COVID activity in the home and this issue. The outbreak at Michener Hill was declared on December 10, more than seven weeks after the employee was no longer at Michener Hill.”

As for the current COVID-19 situation at the facility, the spokesperson says there are currently five positive staff (two have recovered) and four positive residents.

“Sadly, one resident has passed away. We have been in touch with the family to offer our heartfelt condolences,” the spokesperson says.

“The safety of our residents and staff is paramount and we take our responsibility to them, and their families, incredibly seriously. Any disregard for the rules in place to protect the people we care for will be met with a swift and severe response.”
