City plows ready to roll into residential areas January 2

City crews are gearing up to start Snow Zone Plowing and residents are reminded to move their vehicles off the street.

Officials say residents are encouraged to sign up for Snow Zone Alerts to get text, email, or phone call reminders before they need to move their vehicles off the street.

Snow Zone Plowing (residential) will begin on Jan. 2 on Green Routes surrounding Red Deer Schools.

“We are plowing around schools while the students are at home for online learning,” said Parks and Public Works Manager Greg Sikora, in a news release. “Completing these areas when students aren’t in class allows us to avoid delays as parents and busses drop off or pick up children and also any potential risks of kids playing close to where heavy equipment is operating.”

School areas are expected to be complete on Jan. 6, and then crews will begin clearing Green Routes in Snow Zone I on January 7 and continue alphabetically through Snow Zones until Green Routes are complete.

Parking restrictions will be in place during plowing in each Snow Zone, which could be a few days at a time.

“It should only take our crews a day or two to plow Green Routes in each Snow Zone, but it does take us a lot longer if vehicles are left parked on the streets,” added Sikora.

There are many different ways for residents to learn the schedule:

• Sign up for Snow Zone Alerts at reddeer.ca/notifyreddeer to get text, email or phone call reminders before plowing starts in their Snow Zone
• Check the schedule online at reddeer.ca/snowzone
• Follow the City of Red Deer on Facebook and Twitter for daily updates
• Call the Snow Zone Hotline at 403-406-8796
• Look for signs at neighbourhood entrances and on Green Routes

During Green Route plowing, residents will find no-parking signs along the street. Parking restrictions are in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., daily while plowing is scheduled, and vehicles left on the street will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.

On Green routes, snow is plowed and removed to ensure mobility is maintained.

The trigger for Grey Route snow and ice control has not been reached. Crews are monitoring the snow pack on those streets and will determine if plowing is required at a later date.

“We know that many residents are at home these days and we want to balance on-street parking and mobility for Grey Routes,” said Sikora, “Windrows on Grey Routes can have an impact for residential parking so for now, we are going to continue to provide traction control on those streets and continue to monitor the need for plowing.”
