Red Deer records third COVID-19 death

A third death has now been reported in relation to a COVID-19 outbreak at a seniors living facility in Red Deer.

The death of a man in his sixties on Dec. 11 is linked to the outbreak at Points West Living. Comorbidities are unknown at this time.

A woman in her nineties residing at Points West Living passed away from COVID-19 on Dec. 16 and a woman in her eighties who was living there died from the virus on Dec. 18.

Alberta has now had 871 deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, including 11 that were reported on Tuesday.

Red Deer has now seen a total of 1,280 cases of the novel coronavirus, an increase of 18 from Monday. The number of active cases in the city fell by 33 to 382, while recoveries are up by 50 to 895.

Overall, the province reported another 1,021 cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday.

That’s out of 14,199 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of 7.2 per cent.

There are currently 18,311 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, a decrease of 854 from Monday. The province has now seen 73,298 recovered since the start of the pandemic, an increase of 1,864.

There are 802 Albertans in hospital because of COVID-19, an increase of seven, including 152 in intensive care, an increase of one.

Across the Central Zone there are now 1,662 active cases and 74 hospitalizations, including nine in intensive care. The number of COVID-19 deaths in the Central Zone is now 36, an increase of two. The other death reported in the zone on Tuesday was a male in his 40s on Dec. 21. Comorbidities are unknown at this time.

Red Deer County saw its active case count fall by 15 to sit at 84, while Sylvan Lake saw its drop by 11 more to sit at 22.

Clearwater County (Rocky Mountain House) saw its active case count fall by 20 to a total of 34.

Lacombe County has 42 active cases as of Tuesday, a decrease of five. The city of Lacombe’s active case count sits at 23, a decrease of three.

Ponoka County saw its active case count rise by 104 on Tuesday to sit at 368.

Mountain View County has 36 active cases, an increase of three, Olds has 28, an increase of one, and Kneehill County is down one to 22. Starland County has no active cases. The County of Stettler is up five to 25.
