Second COVID-19 death at Red Deer seniors facility

Alberta reported another 1,235 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, marking the third consecutive day of declining one-day case numbers; down from 1,571 on Dec. 17.

With 17,956 tests done, the positivity rate over the last day is 7.16 per cent, about a tenth lower than Saturday.

The number of active cases in the province dropped by 59 on Sunday to 19,201, while recoveries went up by 1,335 to 70,167. The province has now recorded a total of 90,219 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.

There are currently 760 Albertans in hospital, down 17, and 149 people in ICU, down by two.

The province is reporting 10 new deaths for a four-day total of 91, and 851 since the pandemic started.

Sadly, Red Deer is also reporting its second death of the pandemic, a woman in her 80s residing at Points West Living. She passed on Dec. 18. It was also on Friday when Red Deer recorded its first death, a woman in her 90s who was also residing at Points West Living. She passed away on Dec. 16.

An outbreak was declared there on Dec. 2.

The city of Red Deer, meanwhile, now has 431 cases, down three from Saturday. Total cases are now at 1,235, up by 19, while recoveries increased by 21 to 802.

Active cases around Central Zone

Central Zone has now recorded 5,330 total cases, up 126 in the last 24 hours. There are 1,508 active cases, up 58, while recoveries total 3,788, up 55.

There are 72 people in hospital in the zone, down one, and nine in ICU, up one. There are now 34 deaths attributed to the zone, up three, though just two are included in the 10 new deaths reported today provincially.

Other than Red Deer’s second, a woman in her 70s with no known comorbidities, the province says, died on Dec. 17.

Red Deer County now has 90 active cases, down seven since yesterday, while Sylvan Lake has 27, down by one.

Lacombe County now sits at 44 active, also down one, but the city of Lacombe edged up one active case to 27.

In Ponoka County, where active case numbers have risen significantly over the course of several weeks, there are 312 active cases, up a staggering 48. The town of Ponoka is listed at 42 active cases, up four.

Rocky Mountain House has 52 active cases, the same as Saturday, Rimbey has 16, down one, and Drayton Valley has 46, also down one. Stettler and County has 20, up one, and Three Hills/Hwy 21 has 30, up two.
