Paintings by Canada’s World Juniors team being auctioned for local charities

While spending two weeks in quarantine during their time at selection camp in Red Deer, members of Canada’s team for the 2021 World Junior Hockey Championship had some extra time on their hands.

Turns out they spend part of that time exploring their creative side during a “Bob Ross-inspired” painting night, creating pieces of art the public can now get their hands on.

Tourism Red Deer and the Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce have launched the “Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp in Quarantine Art Auction” to the public. Here you have the chance to bid on paintings created by Team Canada players and staff members with proceeds going to local charitable groups.

The auction opened Thursday and will end right after Team Canada’s game on New Year’s Eve that starts at 7 p.m. MT. Winners will be notified, and arrangements will be made for either local pickup or mailing in the new year.

“It’s exciting to see Team Canada players and staff pick up the paintbrush in isolation and create some amazing artwork. The idea originally was to help them take their minds off being in quarantine to try something a bit different. To see what they created was amazing and very impressive,” says Rene Rondeau, Tourism Red Deer’s Executive Director.

“For us to be able to keep the paintings and give fans a chance to bid on these paintings while giving back to our community is golden.” We thank Team Canada for allowing us to do this and give back during this time, Red deer and central Alberta wish them all the best, we’ll be watching and cheering the boys on.”

Tourism Red Deer teamed up with the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce to bring Hockey Canada players and staff a taste of the city during their time here for selection camp, including meals from local restaurants and virtual cycle rides through the city.

Sponsors included EMCO Waterworks, Al-Terra Engineering, Flo-Pro Exhaust, the AJHL’s Blackfalds Bulldogs, Penhold IGA and Troubled Monk.
