Temporary layoffs at the Town of Blackfalds due to facility closures
Due to the fact that its municipal facilities (excluding FCSS) are closed until further in response to provincial restrctions enacted to curb the spread of COVID-19, the Town of Blackfalds says 23 short-term, part-time and full-time employees have been temporarily laid off.
“This was a tough decision, especially with the holiday season before us,” said Chief Administrative Officer Myron Thompson. “The closing of the recreation facilities within the community has necessitated the layoffs, and we are hopeful that our facilities will be re-opened sooner than later, and we can bring our employees back.”
Town officials say the facility closures resulted in work hours for the employees being cut for the second time this year. They note that while the provincial restrictions will be in effect for a minimum of four weeks, it is difficult to know for sure when they will be lifted.
Human Resources Officer Erin Lawrence is reminding impacted staff that they have the ability to access and use the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), which is available anytime and anywhere for staff and includes instant confidential counselling and much more.
