Town of Ponoka outlines restrictions and closures as new COVID-19 rules take effect

Dec 13, 2020 | 12:46 PM

Starting Sunday, Dec. 13, the Ponoka Aquaplex will close temporarily.

The closure is in line with recent COVID-19-related restrictions announced by the Government of Alberta. The pool will be shuttered until at least Jan. 12.

All aquaplex memberships will be paused during the closure and will be reactivated once the facility is able to reopen.

The Ponoka Arena Complex, which includes the curling rink, racquetball courts and the Hudson’s Green Community Activity Centre, also remain temporarily closed.

There of, of course, other restrictions around town.

According to the municipality:

The Town’s outdoor recreation facilities continue to be open to the public with restrictions in place due to COVID-19.

“The Town knows how important it is to provide access to outdoor recreational facilities for our citizens, especially when our indoor rec facilities have to be closed to help prevent the spread of this virus,” saysMayor Rick Bonnett. “That’s why Town staff are working so hard to keep these outdoor facilities open while also putting measures in place to comply with current provincial health restrictions.”

The Outdoor Rink (ODR) at the Arena Complex remains open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a maximum of 10 people allowed on the ice surface at once. ODR users are asked to limit their time on the ice during each visit to allow other users who may be waiting for an opportunity to use the facility.

The new downtown skating plaza will also soon open, the Town says, in addition to the skating trail at Lions Centennial Park.

“We’re asking our citizens to help keep these facilities open during the pandemic by diligently following all measures being put in place,” says Bonnett.

If the Town receives reports of individuals not following provincial health requirements at outdoor facilities such as the ODR, facilities could be closed.

Meantime, the Town office remains open for business via phone, email and online communication.

Citizens can contact the Town office by phone at 403-783-4431, by email at town@ponoka.ca, by fax at 403-783-6745 or online at www.ponoka.ca. Allservice requests and questions will be responded to from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday to Friday.

With respect to bill payments, the Town is waiving late penalties until Dec. 31 with the exception of property taxes.
