Thunder’s Marcellus commits to University Alaska Fairbanks

Dec 9, 2020 | 10:50 AM

The Drayton Valley Thunder have announced that 2002-born forward Mason Marcellus has committed to play Division I hockey for the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The Alaska Nanooks are members of the WCHA and play out of the Carlson Centre in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Marcellus is coming off an impressive start in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, winning rookie of the week honors just before the recent pause in play. In four games so far, the speedy center has a goal and three assists.

Mason joined the Thunder after an impressive senior season at Rice Memorial Prep school in Vermont where the Ontario native led all US-Prep in points with 26 goals and 81 assists for an astounding 107 points.

“The organization would like to congratulate Mason and his family on his commitment to Alaska Fairbanks,” said Thunder Associate Coach Matt Keillor.

“Mason checks off all the boxes when looking for a division I hockey player. He came into Drayton a month early to help out with our youth camps in August and has been dedicated to developing himself and our program from day one. Mason is a player you really have to watch to appreciate. He’s dangerous without the puck which really separates him from other centers around the League. He possesses a high hockey IQ and I think Fairbanks has a very versatile player with excellent character for years to come.”
