Joint-use agreement

County assisting with new ice rinks at Leslieville and Condor schools

Dec 8, 2020 | 3:09 PM

Clearwater County council has agreed to help out Wild Rose School Division with ice rinks at the new school sites in Leslieville and Condor.

Historically, the school division has covered the costs of lighting and other utilities. But due to the two new schools being constructed, existing connections will be lost and additional resources required.

Wild Rose School Division stated that they do not receive funding from Alberta Education for the rinks and intend to keep instructional dollars in the classroom.

County Councillor Daryl Lougheed advocated for the rinks, saying that they have been used extensively by the community in the past and that he fully supports the newly proposed joint-use agreement.

It was also mentioned that the vast majority of rink usage is at night, so the installation of lighting would be highly recommended.

County administration noted that they basically become owners of the rink and that it would be possible they become liable for any injuries that could occur.

Council passed the motion unanimously to pay $40,000 dollars for operating costs for the new gas line, electrical connections and installation, and to add the annual cost of $3,000 for gas and electrical utilities in the 2021 budget.

Reeve Cammie Laird brought up the fact that she is aware this could cause issues with other community groups who had also asked for funding and that she, “Wants things to be fair,” but notes that this project is different.
