Alberta’s chief medical officer of health is set to provide her latest update on the COVID-19 situation in the province.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw will speak during a news conference scheduled for 3:30 p.m. You can watch the news conference below once it begins.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said during Wednesday’s update that the province expects to start getting COVID-19 vaccines on January 4, and he says high-risk patients and health workers will get them first.

Kenney said he has struck an interdepartmental team that will distribute the vaccines from 30 different locations.

He said the vaccines will come in waves and that the vaccine rollout will be done in three phases.

The first phase aims to vaccinate the high priority cases, representing 10 per cent of the population, over the first three months of 2021.

About a third of Albertans will get vaccinated in the next phase, starting in late spring, with priority recipients yet to be determined.

Kenney said if all goes well, the rest of the population will start getting the vaccines in the summer.
