City delays recreation and culture program registration to January

Dec 1, 2020 | 6:45 PM

As The City of Red Deer continues to respond to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and related public health measures, officials have decided to delay winter recreation and culture programming.

Alternatively, city officials say Activity Reservations will continue with a multitude of options for Red Deerians to keep active and be healthy in a more individual manner.

As announced by the provincial government on November 24, all team sports and other group activities are suspended until December 18. With that in mind, we continue to plan for the winter session, recognizing the need to be flexible and adaptable to existing and possible new health measures.

Pending no further restrictions, registered programs for the winter session (January –April, 2021) will be available for browsing in Look n Book on January 6, with registration starting on January 12. Programming will begin the last week of January/first week of February. In previous years, winter registration has occurred the first week of December with programming starting in early January.

“While planning for recreation and culture programming has been challenging, we have been excited to welcome citizens back to our facilities over the last several months for both registered programs and activity reservations,” said Barb McKee, Recreation Superintendent. “Although we don’t know what our operating environment will look like in January, we are working hard to plan flexible programs that will provide an enjoyable experience for citizens in a safe environment.”

Citizens are invited to view available programs starting January 6. A printed Activity Guide will not be produced, but Red Deerians can create their own online custom Activity Guide at www.reddeer.ca/myactivityguide. You can also register for programs from MyActivity Guide, using your Look n’ Book account.

Currently, City recreation and culture facilities are open for the following Activity Reservations:

  • Individual sports, exercise, training or equipment use (e.g., use of the fitness areas, gymnasium, field house, individual tennis, pickleball, badminton and basketball shot practice)
  • Use of the running and walking tracks
  • Public swimming and skating, including sessions at the new Setters Place Ice Oval at
    Great Chief Park
  • Lane swimming
  • Private swimming lessons
  • Licensed preschool programs
  • Individual performing arts activities
  • Visual arts activities (with limited capacity)
