Holding The Line

No property tax increase planned for Penhold next year

Nov 27, 2020 | 1:44 PM

Officials with the Town of Penhold are hoping to hold the line on property taxes next year.

On Monday, council approved the Town Operating budget for 2021 and once again, the Town will not be raising municipal taxes.

Corporate Services Manager Tricia Willis identified that operations will see no increase for 2021.

However, it’s noted that the province has yet to determine how much in school taxes or new policing costs will need to be collected.

Once those numbers are finalized, Town officials say administration will then proceed to set the 2021 tax rate reflecting the provincial changes. This is anticipated to occur in March.

With the uncertainty of future funding from the province, Town officials further point out that capital projects have been identified, but will remain on hold until funds are confirmed.

Elsewhere, the Penhold Utility Bylaw received second and third readings. This Bylaw will come into effect on the January utility billing.

Key changes include a flat fee for water which will be going up $1.20 per month. The sewer fixed fee will be going up $0.50 per month, while the per-cubic metre use will be going up $0.05 for sewer.

Officials say the increases reflect the recommended cost recovery policy set for utility services and the fee increase being charged by the South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commission which is passed on.

According to Town officials, it was identified that Penhold, even with the recommended changes, remains one of the lowest costs for water and sewer in central Alberta.
