A positive COVID-19 test for a McDonald’s employee in Red Deer has forced the temporary closure of the restaurant chain’s downtown location.

Company officials say in a release that the employee at the 4848 52 Avenue location tested positive for the virus on Thursday.

The employee is said to have worked their last shift on Thursday (Nov. 19) from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to immediately shut down the restaurant for a thorough cleaning and sanitization by a certified third party,” McDonald’s Canada says in a release. “We are working to ensure we reopen safely, as we know our guests depend on their local McDonald’s and we are committed to doing our part to help our communities.”

Company officials say all crew members who may have been in close contact with the employee have been asked to self-quarantine until further information is available.

Any guests that may have visited the restaurant on Nov. 19 are strongly encouraged to take directions from the experts at Alberta Health Services by visiting their website.

“In addition to our existing high standards of cleanliness, restaurants continue to demonstrate our Safety+ commitment, which includes enhanced safety measures to ensure every part of the McDonald’s experience is safe for our guests and employees,” the release goes on to say.

“Maintaining the health and well-being of our crew and guests is our top priority, and we will continue to monitor and adapt measures, where necessary.”
