Drivers receiving $810 fines for not yielding at 54 Street crosswalk

The Town of Rocky Mountain has heard multiple complaints this year from parents and concerned citizens of vehicles not yielding to pedestrians at the crosswalk at 52 Avenue and 54 Street.

Local Peace Officers monitored the intersection in October and issued two tickets for failing to yield for a pedestrian in a crosswalk which is an $810 fine and four demerit points.

They also handed out one for failing to yield to a pedestrian, which is a $162 fine and three demerit points.

CPO Kayla Whissell stated that, “Even though pedestrians activate the amber flashing lights, some vehicular traffic appears to disregard it or not fully understand the law when it comes to yielding for a pedestrian.”

She noted that a driver cannot proceed through the crosswalk until the pedestrian reaches the other curb.

Officers mainly monitor that area and the Hwy 752 school bus stop into Creekside around school hours.

The intersection of Hwy 752 and 44 Avenue has seen many complaints from parents as well about their children getting on and off school buses as it is a Provincial highway.

“Members have been advised there is no issues when members are present, however, issues occur when they aren’t there,” Whissell mentioned.

The Creekside highway school bus drop off is intended to be done away with as soon as the 54 Street road extension provides buses with a route through the subdivision.
