Penhold residents receive Winter Warm-Up surprise

Nov 19, 2020 | 2:50 PM

As winter sets in and temperatures drop, Penhold residents will receive a little winter warmth in the form of a Winter Warm-up care package left at their front door today (Nov. 19).

Town officials say this special gift is being given to the residents of Penhold as a reminder that even though these are challenging times there is still a way to share as a community.

“If someone had told me last winter that we’d be hit by a pandemic that would change the way we live I would have thought they’d lost their marbles,” Penhold mayor Mike Yargeau remarked. “Well, here we are…nine months into a pandemic, trying to understand what’s happening, when we can safely get together with family and friends, and what’s in store for our community.”

The Town of Penhold usually hosts a variety of community events throughout the year, but almost all of the events cancelled or revamped this year due to COVID-19, providing opportunities for creative ways in bringing the community together safely.

Winter Warm-Up care packages contain treats from local small businesses with information and activities for residents to enjoy and share safely. The care packages are being delivered by Public Works staff, Community Peace Officers, Penhold Volunteer Fire Dept, town staff and community groups.

“I feel very blessed to live in a community where people have banded together and watch out for their neighbours. They offer support, encouragement, and a shoulder to lean on. I want to say thank you to every resident of Penhold for their positive attitudes, patience and understanding as we continue to maneuver through the ever-changing dos and don’ts. I am so proud to call Penhold home,” said Yargeau.

In addition to the care packages, the Town of Penhold has modified its annual Community Christmas event. Instead of gathering shoulder to shoulder in the Penhold Regional Multiplex when the Town Crier lights the Christmas tree, residents will be bumper to bumper in the parking lot for a drive-in style tree lighting.

“Community Christmas is the event that kicks off the festive season in Penhold, and we wanted to find a way to make sure this still happens. With an incredible amount of creativity, ingenuity and brain storming, the tree lighting will kick-off four weeks of community activities for residents to safely take part in.

According to Yargeau, “There will be a recipe exchange that will be developed into a community cook book, Christmas decorating challenge, Tour of Lights BINGO and a virtual community scavenger hunt for residents to enjoy with great prizes for participants to win.”

Town officials hint that there may also be “a special visitor from the North Pole” who stops by to help at live events.
