A 40-year-old man remains in hospital after he was injured during an altercation with RCMP in Red Deer last weekend.

A media release states that on Nov. 15, just prior to midnight, a Red Deer RCMP member attempted a traffic stop with a 1991 Chevrolet Silverado which had a stolen license plate on it. The male driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

RCMP Police Dog Services eventually located the male hiding under a recreational vehicle about 350 metres away, which led to an altercation with responding officers. When he allegedly refused to obey police commands, the police dog was deployed and bit the man multiple times.

The altercation continued between the male and responding RCMP members. As a result, the male received injuries during his arrest and was transported to hospital where he remains.

The RCMP notified the Director of Law Enforcement about this incident. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the actions of the police.

An investigation into the incident leading up to the arrest, and the actions of the male, remain ongoing by the RCMP.

ASIRT investigators are asking anyone who was in the area of the Circle K store at 2 Jewel Street in Red Deer at around 11:35 p.m. on Nov. 15, and witnessed the confrontation between RCMP and the person or persons associated with the Chevrolet Silverado, or who has any information or video related to this incident, to please contact ASIRT at 403-592-4306.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
