Town of Blackfalds moves to enhanced COVID-19 status

The Town of Blackfalds is among the latest communities in Alberta subject to “enhanced” status for COVID-19 safety protocols.

Due to the rapid increase of active cases across the province, the Government of Alberta released new targeted public health measures that came into effect Nov. 13 to protect citizen’s health and limit the spread of COVID-19.

“Currently, there are 11 active cases in Lacombe County and as such, Blackfalds has been classified as an enhanced zone as of Nov. 16,” reads a Town press release on Wednesday.

“As the COVID-19 pandemic is ever-changing, the Town of Blackfalds must adhere to all updated regulations coming forth from Alberta Health Services and the Province of Alberta.”

Town officials note, however, that these regulations are anticipated to have limited effect on the regular operations of Town facilities, including:

Facility rentals – Any facility and room rentals will now be limited to a maximum of 15 persons and a 50-person limit for weddings or funerals. Rental occupancy has also been updated and those that have booked spaces will be notified.

Effective immediately, masks are strongly recommended in all municipal owned facilities including the Abbey Centre, Community Centre, Arena, Operations Centre, Blackfalds Fire Department, FCSS, Wadey Centre and Civic Cultural Centre. Disposable masks will be made available to the public at these facilities.

However, the Abbey Centre will not be suspending fitness classes or group sports at this time. Should members or visitors be uncomfortable with the rising numbers and opt-out of a course or registered program, the Town will issue full refunds on a case by case basis.

Furthermore, existing Multi-Plex Arena operations other than rental occupancy will not change at this time. Sports activities will continue, but visitors are asked to adhere to the updated guidelines, including spectator numbers, social distancing, and face coverings.

Town officials say they will continue to keep residents updated as new information comes available from both the Province of Alberta and Alberta Health Services.
