Nov 14, 2020 | 3:52 PM

Alberta has recorded more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day for the first time.

Numbers posted to the Alberta Health website Saturday afternoon show the province added 1,026 new cases over the past 24 hours. The number of tests completed was not released.

The province has 9,103 active cases as of Saturday, an increase of 510 from Friday.

Alberta recorded three more deaths related to COVID-19 for a total of 401. Two of the deaths were in the Edmonton zone and another in Calgary.

The province currently has 256 people in hospital because of the virus, an increase of 16, including 54 who remain in intensive care. It marks the ninth straight day that Alberta has set a new hospitalization record and the first time in eight days the number of people in ICU has not increased.

“In the days ahead, we all have a role to play in getting case numbers down to protect our health care system, keep schools and businesses open, and protect vulnerable Albertans,” Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, tweeted. “This is our last chance to avoid more restrictive measures.”

The province will provide another brief update on COVID-19 on Sunday before a detailed update including local COVID-19 numbers is provided on Monday.

Red Deer had 94 active cases as of Friday.
