New event at Westerner Park combines rodeo and art

Nov 10, 2020 | 12:01 PM

Arts meets West on May 5, 2021, with the launch of Cowboy Kicks, a major fundraiser for Westerner Park and the Canadian Pro Rodeo Sport Medicine Team.

“Cowboy Kicks was created to support Westerner Park, an essential economic, social and cultural driver for our region, and the Canadian Pro Rodeo Sport team, an important behind-the-scenes medical service team for rodeo events in Canada,” says Kathy Lacey, Cowboy Kicks Committee Chair.

Cowboy Kicks combines elements of rodeo with an Albertan artisan twist. During the evening, 20 one-of-a-kind fibreglass boots, hand-painted by Albertan artists, will be auctioned off. Guests will be treated to a western meal while enjoying a performance from an award winning Canadian country music artist.

More details about the event will be available in early 2021 through Westerner Park’s website and Cowboy Kick’s social media.

“Cowboy Kicks is a great example of the collaborative spirit of our organization; developing and applying strengths of our partnerships for the betterment of both the arts and agriculture community,” says Westerner Park CEO Mike Olesen.

“2020 was a hard year for rodeo in general and our sport medicine team was no different. These funds will help to offset costs incurred from the stoppage of rodeo during the pandemic, such as taping and medical supplies that had already been purchased and the upkeep and maintenance of our mobile treatment trailers and vehicles,” says Brandon Thome, Executive Director, Canadian Pro Rodeo Sport Medicine Team. “We also hope to obtain one or two items from our ‘wish list’ – including new exercise bikes for our treatment trailers and to restock a variety of orthopedic braces that are necessary for onsite management of acute severe musculoskeletal injuries.”

Call for Artists

The Cowboy Kicks Committee is looking for Albertan artists to design the 20 fibreglass cowboy boots, six large (four feet high) and 14 small (1.5 feet high), for auction at the May event. Artists have until January 15, 2021, to submit three examples of their work and an idea for a theme for decorating a boot. There is a $750 honorarium for painting a large boot and $400 for a small one.

The Fibreglass boots will be ready for painting by January 2021 and are to be submitted by April 2021 to Westerner Park.

Proposals should be submitted to: Cowboy Kicks Committee Westerner Park 4847A-19th St., Red Deer, T4R 2N7 or by email to askus@westernerpark.ca.
