Hinshaw: Alberta at “critical juncture” with 727 new cases Sunday

Alberta is reporting another 727 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Sunday.

That gives the province a weekend total of 1,646 new cases following a provincial record 919 new cases on Saturday.

Today’s total is the third highest daily mark hit in Alberta after 802 were recorded on Nov. 5.

Sunday also saw six new deaths tallied, bringing the death toll to 363. There were five deaths reported on Saturday. None of the 11 from this weekend were in Central Zone, which sits at eight total fatalities.

Geographic data, total/new recoveries, total active cases and hospitalizations will not be reported today.

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, tweeted on Sunday that Albertans must act now with an eye toward the greater good.

“While new cases are lower than yesterday, 727 cases is still concerning,” she wrote. “This is a critical juncture, but we have a say in what the future holds. This week, let’s all go the extra mile to be careful, protect our loved ones & limit the spread of COVID-19.”

She also noted that the province continues to sort out technical issues it began experiencing mid-week. A more detailed COVID-19 update for Alberta is anticipated on Monday.

The most recent data other than new cases and deaths was released Wednesday, Nov. 4, which showed the province had 6,822 active cases.

Those figures also showed 171 people in hospital with 33 in intensive care. Red Deer last checked in at 63 active cases.

On Sunday, Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School confirmed an additional case of COVID-19 to go along with one reported Saturday. That means the school is considered to have an outbreak, which is declared when there are two active cases within a 14-day span. School officials say they are working with AHS to determine the origin of the case.

The school remains set to reopen Thu., Nov. 12 following fall break.

Alberta has recorded a grand total of 33,504 cases of the coronavirus.
